Fast Attack Slug

Posted by Pastor Ron Wednesday, February 02, 2011 8:00:00 AM

As I posted Sunday, Nudibranchs come in a wide assortment of sizes, shapes, colors and even modes of locomotion.  The 'Giant Nudibranch' is one that does the twist.

They twist and twirl to send themselves flipping and flopping through the water. Click the photo above for pictures of the twist.  (click here for non-flash)

When they aren't dancing they slip along the bottom like any other self-respecting underwater slug.  But unlike land slugs, dendronotus iris nudibranch s are predators and they can strike fast when attacking their favorite prey: the tube anemone.

Amazing to watch whether doing the twist, sliding along the bottom or jumping on dinner.

Below is a YouTube Video of a Nudibranch successfully attacking a tube anemone.  Skip to the 1 minute mark for the action.
